My life has always been influenced by poodles. I remember very well a miniature black poodle named GIOK (dog of an unknown origin) who lived in the house where I was born. When I was a little more grown up came a brown standard poodle (at that time standard poodle were maximum 55cm. tall and not as tall as nowadays). This poodle was coming out from a renowned Italian brown poodle breeding “dell’ AGABAM ” famous for that color. His breeder was Miss Carla Gallazzi a typical personage.
After that dog came in our house for the first time a white standard poodle from the French breeding “du Grand Jeu” of Mr. Holy; from then started my life within white poodles. My starting as an exhibiter was accidental; my mother, who was taking care of the dog, was sick and I brought the dog to be groomed. Just before us on the grooming table there was a white poodle groomed in a way that I had never seen before.
I asked to the groomer which breed was that dog, and he answered me that it was the same breed of my dog but groomed “continental stile” because it was used to be presented at “dog shows”. I did not even know about the existence of beauty contests for dogs, believing those were for girls only.
The groomer told me that if I wished he could have groomed my dog in the same way. So it happened!!! I started showing in 1956 at Terminillo show (near Rome) judged by Dr.Pierangelo Pesce from Milan. From that moment began my adventure as an exhibiter first and breeder and judge later.
I have produced Italian and International champions: Swiss, Montecarlo, France, St.Marino, Austria, European, Worldwide, etc.etc.
In 1961 ENCI and FCI granted me for the affix “DELLA GENS VALERIA”. I was member of the C.C.C. (Club of the breeds of 9°group) from its start when Marquise Maria Luisa Bourbon del Monte (Pekingese breeder”di Capalbio”) was chairman, becoming member of committee of the club when Mrs.Tina Violi became chairman. (She has been my teacher, from her I have learnt everything I know about dogs!!!).
Later I have been member of committee for several years of the Gruppo Cinofilo Romano. I organized the Roman dog show, (they were really beautiful) at Villa Borghese and Parco dei Daini. Encouraged by Mrs. Violi in the seventies I passed my examinations at the ENCI to become a poodle judge.
During my career I have judged all over Europe: France, Belgium, Luxembourg, Germany, Austria, Czech rep, Hungary, Portugal, Spain, Switzerland, Holland, Ireland, Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Finland, Ukraine, Croatia, Slovenia, Russia and not only poodles, but also all the 9° group of toy breeds that I judge since 1994.
